The grounds crew may have waited until the last minute to add the finishing touches, but the field design for tonight’s College Football Playoff National Championship between Notre Dame and Ohio State has finally been revealed.
The College Football Playoff logo, national championship wordmark and location are prominently displayed at midfield of Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, just as they have been since the four-team playoff was implemented in 2014-15.
There’s also the “2025” logo, which will be worn as a patch on the left shoulder of the Fighting Irish and Buckeyes’ uniforms, painted at the 25-yard lines. This logo continues to replace the No. 0 with the playoff logo.
The field is complete with the playoff’s signature black end zones, which were filled in early this morning and feature both team’s wordmarks and the playoff logo in opposing corners. Ohio State’s wordmark is predominately scarlet while Notre Dame’s is gold.
The only season in which the title game did not include black end zones was 2020, when LSU knocked off Clemson at the Caesars Superdome (known then as the Mercedes-Benz Superdome) with grass-colored backgrounds.
The last time the national championship was held in Atlanta, meanwhile, the game featured black end zones as Alabama beat Georgia in overtime. Both times they’ve waited until after the teams practiced on the field to completely fill in the end zones.
