What are you wearing on these crisp fall days? I know some people don’t care about trends — life is short, wear whatever you’d like! — but I really love the visual conversation of seeing people re-wearing their mom’s ’70s sweaters, say, or breathing life into old jeans from the back of their closet. If you, too, are curious, here are seven trends to look out for this fall…
1. Funnel necks have been a trend since spring, and, happily, it looks like they’re here to stay. I’ve always liked funnel-neck jackets, and I’m now into the sweaters, too. (And this one with a stripe!)
2. Animal print. I used to equate leopard print with Mrs. Robinson — older, sexy, a little dangerous — but the styles these days feel laid-back and cool, like something you’d wear to the movies or park. I’m into this dress, this sweater, and these shoes. If you’d rather just dip a toe, this scarf is great; and if you’re craving more, wowwwww this coat.
3. Lace details. This blouse would be gorgeous for dinner dates, don’t you think? And you could wear this satin shirt on its own or under a blazer. But, gahh, if money were no object, how gorgeous is this maxi dress???
4. Autumnal stripes. Think: striped sweaters in deep reds, browns, and blues, to pair with comfy jeans and sneakers. I actually have this shirt and have been wearing it non-stop.
5. Pops of red have always been cool, of course, but they’ve gotten so ubiquitous that Harper’s Bazaar announced, “Red became a neutral this season.” I’d love to wear this cute beanie all winter — it’s nice to have color in a sea of black coats — and these striped socks are extremely adorable for only $15. Also: pretty shoes, cozy scarf.
6. Dark-wash jeans feel casual for bookstore runs and documentary screenings (are you going to see Nathan Fielder’s???), but they also dress up easily for work meetings and drinks with friends. I wear this high-rise pair all the time (this vintage-style version is great, too), and I love how this pair has the teeny-tiniest kick-flare. Also, this comment from Anna made me laugh: “I look like a clown in barrel pants. Hope we see some non-barrel styles this fall.”
7. Barrel bags. I’ve been spotting this bag shape around town this fall, and they look both chic and playful. I’ve heard them called “pencil bags,” which pleases the school-loving library girl in me to no end!
Thoughts? Which would you wear? This dress is two trends in one!
P.S. Women share their weeks of outfits, and would you try ghost lashes?
