Forza Horizon 6 Lets You Race A Gundam And It Looks Awesome

Next week, the garage doors will be opening on Forza Horizon 6. The anticipated new entry in the open world motorsports series is set across a sprawling map inspired by Japan’s natural landscapes and the urban sprawl of Tokyo. Like previous entries, new racing events and stunt modes borrow from its host country. Often to absurd results. Japan’s legacy of robotics and big mech adoration is taking Forza to one logical conclusion: giant robot racing.

In the “Mech My Day” event, Forza Horizon 6 seats you in a Honda Acura squaring you off against “Chaser Zero,” a giant robot that’s equal parts Gundam and Patlabor. A racing showcase reminiscent of that time FOX had Shawn Crawford try 100-metres against a giraffe, you’ll have to tear up pavement to catch up with a robot smashing through the entire overpass. It may seem like the odds are stacked against you, this robot proves to be something of a good sport in the last leg of the race.

Forza Horizon’s showcase events usually act as the most bombastic races in the game, pitting luxury vehicles against extreme weather or mighty machines. In Forza Horizon 5, set in Mexico, you raced against stunt planes and hot air balloons. While you may not be challenging the Shinkansen in Forza Horizon 6 (some have criticized the lack of showcase events in general), you’ll be attempting to best an even more outlandish miracle of future technology.

Forza Horizon 6 is shaping up to be a dependably good ride for the series. The more beginner-friendly Horizon series has largely overtaken the mainline motorsports simulator one, opening the door to higher strangeness. Splitting from the purist path, you’ll be able to appreciate the vast Japanese terrain on your own terms, or pull off Jackass stunts with cars only Jay Leno could afford. Just don’t harass the cherry blossom trees.
