Says M.Kim on what childhood lessons can you never give up: “We moved to a very rural town when I was 10. My mom was always amazed by the miles and miles of corn fields and commented on it all the time — so much so that her three preteen kids started ignoring her. So, my dad instituted a rule: You MUST agree with mom when she comments on the corn. He would cue us like an orchestra conductor: ‘That’s a lot of corn, Mom!’ For all our rebellions over the teenage years, we never balked at this rule. Now, 20 years later, as I drive around the same roads as an adult, my husband, who was not present for any of this but folded into it because of my own silliness, will glance at me as we see the cornfields, and we’ll exclaim to each other, ‘That’s a lot of corn!’”

Says Kerry on what childhood lessons can you never give up: “My mom taught us to always notice the sky. Appreciate the colors, see the shapes of the clouds, watch a plane fly through, let the sun hit your face. Not only is it a lesson to slow down, but it opens up your chest and shoulders. It’s a lovely thing, even when it’s raining.”
