Even though we’re well into November, this week showed that it’s still a spooky season. Heretic, a horror thriller about two Mormon missionaries tortured by Hugh Grant as he tries to test their faith, fell behind Venom at the box office for its opening weekend. But just like in the film, not all hope is lost at the end. It is estimated to earn around $10 million this weekend and will become one of the highest-earning openings for A24; possibly earning third place after Civil War ($25 million) and Hereditary ($13.6 million.) Heretic narrowly passed the light-hearted palate cleanser The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, which roughly made about $9.5 million this weekend but still did pretty well and could possibly break even by next weekend. Now, we wonder if A24 will share how well Heretic did in Utah, considering the high praise of the film from the Whitneys.
