The Jersey Shore BlueClaws, High-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies in the South Atlantic League, will commemorate a quarter-century since the franchise’s debut when they play a game as the Shine Barons this season. The nickname celebrates the team’s silver anniversary, pays tribute to an expansive New Jersey forest, and wonders what (kind of) might have been.
The name Shine Barons rhymes with Pine Barons, which was a runner-up in the team’s name-the-team contest in the year 2000. That name was a play off of “Pine Barrens,” the name of New Jersey’s iconic, 1.1 million-acre pine forest that stretches between New York and Philadelphia.
The logo, created by Brandiose, features an animal common to the Pine Barrens, a gray fox (or silver fox?), dressed as a wealthy baron, complete with monocle and top hat. The character is carrying a pine tree as baseball bat over its shoulder.
The Shine Barons will take to the field June 14.
