Love Me Tender review – quietly devastating…

Some films ask to be watched; Love Me Tender asks to be felt. Anna Cazenave Cambet’s quietly devastating adaptation of Constance Debré’s 2020 novel unfolds like a long exhale, exploring the fragile space where love, identity and motherhood collide. Vicky Krieps delivers another captivating performance as Clémence, a former lawyer whose decision to leave her marriage after embracing her sexuality leads to a bitter custody battle over her young son. Krieps has a remarkable ability to communicate everything without saying much at all. She never leans into melodrama, instead allowing every glance, silence and small expression reveal the emotional weight Clémence carries.

Rather than turning the story into a hackneyed courtroom drama, Cambet retains focus on the quieter moments that define Clémence’s life. The film lingers on walks, afternoons spent swimming or fleeting moments with her son, capturing both the beauty of ordinary life and the loneliness that comes when it begins to slip away. The naturalistic cinematography complements this approach, making every frame feel intimate without ever becoming sentimental. At just over two hours, some scenes begin to circle familiar emotional ground, slowing the film’s momentum. But that patience ultimately reflects the story itself: healing is rarely dramatic, and neither is loss.
