Meta cancels its Apple Vision Pro competitor

Meta has allegedly stopped working on its Apple Vision Pro competitor, codenamed La Jolla. Development on this started in November of last year, and it was supposed to come out at some point in 2027.

Now that’s not happening anymore. The reason for the cancelation of the project apparently has to do with the fact that the headset was using MicroOLED displays which made it very expensive, much more than Meta’s initial goal to keep the cost under $1,000.

The $3,500 Apple Vision Pro hasn’t exactly been a resounding hit either, and if not even Apple can make a high-price device a best seller, then that might be an indication that there just isn’t enough of a market for such high-end headsets to fit two competing ones.

Referring to the news about the La Jolla headset’s cancelation, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth said: “We have many prototypes in development at all times. But we don’t bring all of them to production. We move forward with some, we pass on others. Decisions like this happen all the time, and stories based on chatter about one individual decision will never give the real picture”.

While the high-end headset may have been canceled, Meta is still working on a more affordable Quest, codenamed Ventura, which could be coming out before the end of this year. Meta is also expected to showcase new AR glasses next month, while the Quest 4 should arrive in 2026.
