Nintendo Keeps Changing The Zelda Movie’s Release Date

Nintendo’s next Hollywood adaptation is The Legend of Zelda, and it’s coming out in 2027. When in 2027? Well, that’s the part the company can’t quite make up its mind about. It’s just changed the date again.

“This is Miyamoto,” Nintendo posted on X on Wednesday. “We have decided to change the worldwide theatrical release date of the live-action film ‘The Legend of Zelda’ from May 7, 2027 to April 30, 2027. In order to deliver it to everyone even one day sooner, the team is united in advancing production. It’s less than a year until release, but please wait just a little longer.”

There’s not currently any other major movie on the calendar for either of those weeks, so I’m not sure what the motivating factor was for Nintendo shifting its schedule around. Maybe this puts it closer to the release of an unannounced game? Maybe it has some inside intel on some other big release happening in May?

Either way, this isn’t the first time the Switch 2 manufacturer has played musical chairs with its Legend of Zelda movie launch date. It was originally supposed to arrive on March 27, 2027, which certainly had a nice symmetry to it. “It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be,” Miyamoto said at the time. “Thank you for your patience.”

I guess the live-action Zelda movie just needed four extra weeks of production time, not five. But what fans really need is an actual trailer. We still know next to nothing about the upcoming adaptation, other than that Bo Bragason (Pinocchio) plays Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (Three Girls) stars as Link.

The princess’ Sheikah bodyguard Impa appears to be in the movie as well, but will they be facing off against Ganon or Ganondorf? Will there even be a proper Triforce in the movie? Most importantly: will Link speak? Hopefully, we get the answers to some of those questions before Nintendo changes the release date a third time.
