OnePlus (and its parent Oppo) were embroiled in a very protracted patent dispute with Nokia in the past, which at one point saw OnePlus and Oppo devices banned from sale in Germany (and this only ended a few months ago), and now unfortunately history repeats itself.
Though this time the problem isn’t with Nokia, it’s also a patent dispute, with InterDigital, over key patents for 5G and other mobile technologies. And that sounds pretty similar to what the Nokia kerfuffle was all about.
The OnePlus 12 is among the victims
OnePlus’ online store in Germany once again has no smartphones for sale, though its other products seem to be fine – so this is clearly about 5G. It’s unclear when OnePlus will be able to sell its handsets in Germany again.
The company has issued the following official statement on the matter:
OnePlus places high value on intellectual property rights and fair access to standard essential patents, which is essential for driving innovation in the industry. We will continue to negotiate with InterDigital and wish to solve this matter in an amicable way. Meanwhile, our commitment in Europe remains unchanged and we will continue to provide excellent products and services to our users.
