The Rangers have acquired defenseman Carson Soucy from Vancouver for a 3rd round pick. Soucy, a left handed defenseman with another year at $3.25 million on his contract, is a big body that eats minutes for Vancouver. That fit the bill for what Chris Drury was looking for, and the 3rd round pick is fair value for a minutes eater with another year on his contract.
In 59 games this year, Soucy has put up a line of 3-7-10, but that’s not really his game. He’s more of a big body, stay at home type defenseman. This year may be an outlier, but his numbers are atrocious. He’s one of the worst defensemen in the league based solely on metrics, which is not a fair or complete analysis. He was much, much better last season. Vancouver and the Rangers really are mirror images of each other, aren’t they?
It’s expected that the Rangers will use him alongside Adam Fox when he returns from injury. This trade probably means the end of one of Calvin de Haan or Zac Jones in New York, with the smart money on the latter given his prior trade request.
The pick is the San Jose pick the Rangers just acquired in the Reilly Smith trade. I’m torn on this one since Jones has been very good and I think this means he’s getting moved tomorrow. It’s also very hard to ignore Carson Soucy’s numbers this year, even if the hope is that it’s an outlier.
