A lot went down in Edgewater on Friday’s episode of “Sheriff Country,” from Hank and Cassidy discovering that Sylvia’s son Owen actually killed Punch and Andy’s mom, to Wes fumbling Mickey and Eva’s investigation to earn the gang’s trust. But let’s forget all of that noise in favor of Season 2, Episode 2’s biggest moment: Boone and Emmy kissed?!
It was a quick moment in the first half of the episode, an impulsive move while Emmy was examining Boone’s gnarly stitches, but it’s definitely a sign of more romantic things to come, according to showrunner Matt Lopez.
“She’s just really quirky,” Lopez tells TVLine of Emmy. “She’s very different from Mickey, and she’s very different from Boone’s relationship last year, Nora. The relationship between Emmy and Boone will intensify and become really rich. It’s a great pairing.”
Lopez also sings the individual praises of Emmy’s portrayer Jenny Raven, who made such a good impression with the Powers That Be in Season 1 that they decided to bring her back in a more substantial capacity. Lopez says it’s a similar path that Ian Quinlan took on the show; after recurring as Hank last season, he’s now a full-fledged series regular.
“[Ian] was on set for two days and it was like, we’ve got to get this guy in more episodes,” Lopez recalls. “That’s how we felt about Jenny in the role of Emmy.”
‘Mickey feels threatened’ by Boone’s connection with Emmy, ‘but at the same time…’
Now for the obvious follow-up question: Where does Mickey fit into all of this? Boone confessed his feelings to her in the Season 1 finale (“I’m crazy about you, I’ve always been crazy about you!”), but she foolishly responded by telling him that she loves him “like family.”
In the Season 2 premiere, a deliriously intoxicated Mickey told Boone that she “messed up” and “made the wrong choice” in her response, but when the two spoke again in the cold, cruel light of day, Boone chose to keep Mickey’s confession to himself. As showrunner Matt Lopez told TVLine at the time, Boone’s decision was a “noble and selfless” one, recognizing that Mickey has enough drama in her life without them complicating their working relationship.
But Boone simply not dating Mickey is different than Boone actively dating someone else, and Lopez says that Mickey is going to have a lot of feelings about his relationship with Emmy.
“In Episode 6, which is a very lovely episode, we’ll see a side of Boone that is more vulnerable than we’ve ever seen,” Lopez tells TVLine. “Emmy is a large part of bringing that out of him, and Mickey realizes that. On the one hand, Mickey feels threatened by it, but at the same time, she does love Boone as a friend, so she wants what’s best for him. It’s just really messy and rich.”
OK, let’s talk: How do you feel about Emmy and Boone getting together? Do you support it, or are you waiting for him and Mickey to get their acts together? Drop a comment with your thoughts below.
