Sonic the Hedgehog came out 35 years ago. What better way to celebrate the Blue Blur’s anniversary than paying top-dollar for some classy replicas of the original Sega Genesis cartridges? Both Sonic 1 and 2 can be yours for a combined price of $200. You might even be lucky enough to get one of the cartridges infused with Chaos Emerald energy. I think that means it glows?
That’s the latest nostalgia pitch from iam8bit, which just announced the Sonic the Hedgehog (35th Anniversary) – Legacy Cartridge Collection. Each set comes with a replica case, a premium booklet, and an NTSC Genesis-compatible cartridge you can plug in and start playing today. Or whenever iam8bit starts shipping the retro memorabilia out. The first wave of orders is expected to start arriving before the end of Q3 2026.
I know what you’re thinking. $100 is a lot. Even for a nice little collection with some extra goodies inside. You can currently buy an actual copy of the original Sonic the Hedgehog used for just $15 loose or $30 if you’re willing to splurge on a complete-in-box version. You can even pick up the original two games and an entire Sega Genesis for less than the total price of just one of these replicas.
But also consider that if, back in 1991, you were walking into a Toys ‘R Us, you’d be paying about $50 for a copy of Sonic the Hedgehog. Adjusted for inflation, that’s about $125.49 in today’s dollars. Not so bad when you think of it that way, right? No doubt part of the expensive price tag comes from retro companies today having to order very small quantities of total units, thus making their individual prices higher. But part of it is also probably just knowing that nostalgia-pilled millennials will shell out dumb amounts of money to briefly relive a fond memory.
