It’s like we were in Harris. Taylor Swift has officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be the next president of the United States. “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election,” Swift announced in the lengthy caption of an Instagram post shared shortly after the presidential debate on Tuesday. She explained that recent AI images of her falsely endorsing Donald Trump helped her realize that she needs to be “very transparent about [her] actual plans for this election as a voter.” After sharing why she supports the Democratic candidate, she encouraged her followers to do their own research and register to vote, finally signing her statement — in a dig at J.D. Vance — as “Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady.” The photo Swift shared alongside this endorsement was one of her hugging her cat (not unlike the way she recently controversially embraced alleged Trump supporter Brittany Mahomes). Walz, a known Swiftie, said he was “incredibly grateful” to his “fellow cat owner” while reacting to her endorsement live on MSNBC, adding, “That’s the type of courage we need in America to stand up.”
Swift was vocal about her support for Joe Biden’s election in 2020, announcing her reasoning in a statement to V Magazine: “The change we need most is to elect a president who recognizes that people of color deserve to feel safe and represented, that women deserve the right to choose what happens to their bodies, and that the LGBTQIA+ community deserves to be acknowledged and included.” She also baked some cookies because Swift gets her mittens out when she is serious about something. In her documentary Miss Americana, Swift showed her struggles with being open politically, expressing regret over not endorsing Hilary Clinton and even tearfully arguing with her father over her decision to support Tennessee Democrats Phil Bredesen and Jim Cooper publicly. Since then, she’s encouraged her audience to register to vote during primary elections and to vote as early as possible.
Now that the serious business is out of the way, Swift has some baking to do. What dessert would be best to support Harris’s campaign? My vote is for a coconut blondie.
