Tennessee Titans Won’t Wear Houston Oilers Throwback Uniforms In 2025 – SportsLogos.Net News

In addition to promoting their light blue alternate jerseys to primary status, the Tennessee Titans announced on Thursday they will not wear their Houston Oilers throwback uniforms during the 2025 season.

“As we sit here today, the plan is to wear (light) blue at every one of our home games this year,” team president Burke Nihill said in a statement, leaving their navy blue alternate jerseys to only be worn on the road if the opponent chooses to wear white at home.

Reintroduced in 2023, the uniforms pay homage to “Luv Ya Blue” era with white helmets that feature light blue and red oil derricks on the sides, light blue jerseys with red trim and white pants with stripes that match the helmet and sleeve cuffs.

The look spanned from 1975-97, including the Oilers’ first season in Tennessee after relocating from Houston. The road version was also worn for the entire 1998 season before the franchise rebranded as the Titans and unveiled new uniforms in 1999.

The Titans wore the Oilers throwback uniforms three times, including a 28-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons and a 19-16 overtime loss to the Houston Texans in 2023 and a 23-14 loss to the Texans last season – much to the delight of the franchise’s former fans in Houston.

Tennessee’s use of the Oilers’ branding has become a point of contention among those in Houston, where the franchise spent 37 years, though the nickname, logo and colors are still the intellectual property of the Titans and Houston was granted an expansion franchise shortly after they relocated.

With the Titans moving to a new stadium in 2027, it’s easy to wonder if the decision to scrap the throwback uniforms – at least for the foreseeable future – is a precursor to a potential rebrand that would combine the Titans’ current branding with a Oilers throwback-inspired design. Time will tell…
