Rest in peace, Bennifer (2002-2004, 2022-2024). On August 20, after months of speculation about an imminent split, news broke that Jennifer Lopez had filed for divorce from Ben Affleck, exactly two years after a wedding ceremony at Affleck’s home in Georgia. The memes began immediately. For example, Lopez’s filing listed the separation date as April 26, 2024, which happens to be the day that Challengers was released. Which could mean nothing! Or, as TikTok user @mattfleck.memes theorized, could mean that “ben really walked out of that movie theater, took his phone off airplane mode, and texted jen ‘it’s over.’” Maybe he felt a sudden urge to go play tennis with Matt Damon? That’s right, for better or for worse, you can always count on the internet to find a way to take a serious, likely heart-wrenching event and memorialize it via memes. Everyone grieves differently, we guess? Here, a roundup of all the different ways that the internet is processing the breakup.
