After a one-season hiatus, the Washington Nationals will wear red uniforms once again.

Yesterday, the Nationals announced the return of red alternate jerseys for the upcoming 2025 season; the new alternate option will replace the white pullover tops the club introduced one year ago today. Washington wore that uniform just eleven times before ditching them.

The new look differs slightly from the red jerseys the Nats wore previously. While the red base and white curly “W” logo are returning, the blue and white piping that once ran down the front of the jersey are gone. Instead, we get a plain red jersey with the only striping reserved for the cuffs of each sleeve and around the collar, where we get a blue and white pairing.

This will be the fourth different red jersey the Nationals have worn since moving down from Montreal following the 2004 season. The Nats first wore a red jersey with an interlocked “DC” logo on the chest from 2006 to 2008. In 2009, they switched to the curly W logo on the front with plain white piping down the front. A blue stripe was added to the white down the chest for the 2011 season, which remained until the end of the 2023 season. Washington chose not to wear their red jersey during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

The Nationals join the (Sacramento) Athletics, Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Guardians, and New York Mets as Major League Baseball clubs that will change their uniforms for the 2025 season. The Nationals had previously announced they would celebrate their 20th anniversary with a commemorative cap patch and that their grey cherry blossom-themed City Connect uniforms would not be worn in 2025.
