WGA Reaches Tentative New Deal

The Writers Guild of America reached a tentative deal with studios and streamers on Saturday morning. Variety reports the deal will be four years long instead of the standard three-year deal. There are no immediate details on what the plan entails, but one of the key changes the WGA was fighting for was an improvement in its health care plans. They demanded an increase in contributions to their Health Fund and Pension Plan. Deadline also alleges the deal includes AI protections and an increase in fees and residuals for streaming. Their old contract was originally set to expire on May 1. Union members still need to approve the tentative deal and no word on when the vote would take place.

The WGA did not ask its members to authorize a strike this time. That might be because the 115 union employees of the WGA West have been on strike for about seven weeks, the same people who would be organizing a writers’ strike for the guild.
