A 5’7” man and a woman in a designer gown walk onto a boat… No, these people aren’t the newest contestants on Love Island USA, it’s Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez, and they are officially married. After a controversial week leading up to the ceremony, the two have said “I do” in the sinking city of Venice, surrounded by loved ones and their favorite movie stars (hi Sydney Sweeney!).
Venetians and Europeans in general have been protesting excessive tourism in their country for a while now, and for Italians, this party is the last straw. “This wedding is the symbol of the exploitation of the city by outsiders,” a protester explained. “Venice is now just an asset.” Another protester wrote on a sign: “If you can rent Venice for your wedding you can pay more tax.” In return, the couple donated to several Venice conservation efforts, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that they’re hosting a huge celeb-filled party in a sinking city.
Besides Sweeney, other celeb guests included Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, the Kardashians (Kim, Khloe, Kylie Jenner, Kendall Jenner, and Kris Jenner), Tom Brady, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Kylie wore a silver dress that may or may be a little too close to white for most bride’s taste but maybe Sánchez knows she’s the star of the show. While Katy Perry didn’t show up to the wedding of her space pal, her recent ex, Orlando Bloom, did. But it seems that there’s another guest that’s on his mind anyhow.
Kim Kardashian, are you saying Sánchez-Bezos copied you by getting married in Italy and for booking a Bocelli? Maybe not, but Matteo Bocelli, son of Andrea Bocelli, performed Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” per Page Six. Despite the ceremony being on Friday night, supposedly the big crazy party will be on Saturday, with DJ Cassidy performing (aka the same person who played at Beyoncé’s wedding).
Every quote from Sánchez feels like it was from an episode of The White Lotus. On her something blue for the wedding, she told Vogue it was, “Well, Blue Origin.” She also “apologetically” told the reporter during the cover story, “I like food!” and that “Food is such a big part of life. I’m Latin!” So true, diva.
