The breakthrough discovery emerged from analysis of data gathered by the eROSITA X-ray telescope, which orbits the Sun-Earth Lagrangian point L2. This sophisticated instrument provided researchers with the clearest view ever obtained of the soft X-ray background, allowing them to peer deep into the structure of interstellar space without interference from Earth’s atmosphere or magnetosphere.
