“If the apocalypse comes, beep me.” — Buffy Summers
The apocalypse has come for the Buffy: the Vampire Slayer reboot, and Hulu beeped Sarah Michelle Gellar. Gellar took a minute out of the Ready or Not 2: Here I Come press tour to send condolences to the online Scooby Gang. “So, I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me,” she opened with. “Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale.” Somehow we know this is all Xander’s fault.
The Buffy reboot has been in the works for a year and some change. Chloé Zhao, hot off Hamnet, was set to direct and Poker Face’s Nora and Lilla Zuckerman were attached to write. For Buffy-lovers and Joss Whedon-haters, it was a dream come true. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’s Ryan Kiera had even been cast as the newest Slayer on the block. “I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her,” Gellar said, “and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that.”
“And I promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you could still beep me.” Girl, we are so close.
