The New York Rangers have re-signed defenseman Matthew Robertson to a 1 year contract carrying a league-minimum $775,000 cap hit at the NHL level. Robertson, the Rangers 2nd round pick in 2019, is still looking for his first NHL game. He’s got a good frame at 6’4 and 211 lbs, but he simply hasn’t put it all together to warrant an NHL call up.
Robertson is very far down on the depth chart, and at this point it’s unlikely he pans out into anything substantial at the NHL level. He’s a nice piece in Hartford for sure, but at 23 years old and passed by guys like Zac Jones, Connor Mackey, Brandon Scanlin, and even Ben Harpur, it seems his NHL hopes are over, at least with the Rangers.
Robertson will need to clear waivers in September.
